Hey There!

šŸ‘‹ Welcome to the home of the Delaware Ultimate Community! šŸ„ This is the exploratory committee's research and workšŸ¤Ÿ.

Why does this committee exist?

Currently, Delaware Ultimate is governed by Philadelphia Area Disc Alliance (PADA). Becoming independent again will allow us to focus on initiatives that nurture our community and reach the full potential of what Delaware Ultimate has to offer.

  • Lower costs
  • Increased transparency
  • More events
  • Less overhead
  • Pickup and skills clinics
  • Youth and women-matching outreach
  • Including the community in self-governance
  • Local headquarters & activitiesĀ

As a players association, Delaware Ultimate has an incredible potential for long term growth. With the freedom to set our own agendas, the community will grow in size, recruit more people for leadership roles, and cultivate a rich environment that embraces the unique spirit of the Delaware Ultimate personality.

What will stay the same?

A lot! Day to day, not much will change. Weā€™ll still be playing the same sport in the same locations at the same times. Leagues will cost less and there will be more social events. Other than that, many people might not even notice the difference.

  • Same leagues
  • Same location
  • Lower price

Decreased costs

Becoming independent will also allow us to decrease the cost of leagues while still providing the same great experience. Any profits will be reinvested in our community.

  • Lowered league costs
  • ā€œPay what you canā€ league fees
  • More free ultimate (pickup)

Financial Autonomy

You may have noticed league prices have steadily gone up over the last 8 years and weā€™ve had fewer and fewer parties. Itā€™s not because our expenses have gone up, itā€™s because external pressure has been applied to increase the profit margins.

We can lower costs because weā€™ll be in control of our own finances and overhead. This will give us the freedom to spend our money on events that build community, marketing and advertising to grow the sport, and sponsoring pickup and hat tournaments. Reclaiming this autonomy is key to furthering initiatives that are of interest to Delaware Ultimate. We spend the money to serve our community.

  • More parties
  • More events
  • Lowered league costs
  • Marketing to grow the league

Expanding the Ultimate Network

We love and support PADA, our Philly-based sister organization. We recognize the needs of Philly are different from that of Delaware, which is why we can operate independently while still supporting each otherā€™s missions.

The bylaws were prepared after researching bylaws from over a half-dozen other ultimate organizations, including PADA!  The intention of the bylaws is to be lean, transparent, and flexible.

"Membership" is important to include in the bylaws when filing for nonprofit status, and in the DUC bylaws it is presented in the most flexible way - as "established by vote of the board".  One of the first policies the board would need to establish is what constitutes membership; we envision membership to be something along the lines of "anybody who participated in the DUC in the past xx months/years/calendar years", and since the league is built around accessibility, the expectation is there would never be a fee for membership.
